Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signaled that he is still standing by President Trump after critics called for his impeachment, following the storming of the Capitol on Wednesday.

“I am proud of what we’ve accomplished — not just in the national security, foreign policy space, which I’ve worked with, but the things that we’ve done with families, the pro-life work that we have done. These are things that will truly be historic. I think history will remember us very well for these things when the books are written,” Pompeo said in remarks to Republican lawmakers and staffers.

“While I think we all think the violence that took place in the place where you all work in the Capitol was tragic, I’ve watched people walk away from this president already. And they are not listening to the American people. Not remotely,” he then added.

His comments came after a daylong, private meeting with the Republican Study Committee, as Breitbart News reported.

Pompeo also claimed that the foreign policies under the Trump administration did far more for the world than the policies implemented by the Obama administration.

“We watched eight years of the foreign policy of the previous administration that was fantastic. Fantasy," said Pompeo. "They would enter into agreements and arrangements that weren’t based on anything with the potential to be lasting, and if America First in foreign policy means anything, it means being realistic.”

Other Republicans, however, have severed from the Trump administration following pro-Trump rioters storming the Capitol.

"President Trump has not always chosen the right words," former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley stated. "He was wrong with his words in Charlottesville, and I told him so at the time. He was badly wrong with his words yesterday."

Democrats, meanwhile, have insisted that articles of impeachment against Trump could be drawn up by tomorrow or the next day.

“I think they will be drawn up ... tomorrow (Monday),” U.S. House Democratic Whip James Clyburn told CNN. “It may be Tuesday or Wednesday before they are actually taken (to the floor), but I think they will be taken this week.”

As some Republicans are distancing themselves from President Donald Trump after a violent mob of his supporters breached the U.S. Capitol, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came to the president's defense Saturday, criticizing Twitter's decision to ban his account.

"Silencing speech is dangerous. It’s un-American. Sadly, this isn’t a new tactic of the Left. They’ve worked to silence opposing voices for years. We cannot let them silence 75M Americans. This isn’t the CCP," Pompeo tweeted to his personal account.

Pompeo's comments also come as some extremist Trump supporters are threatening to return to Washington to disrupt President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.
