Former Attorney General William Barr issued harsh criticism of President Trump's performance on Wednesday, when a violent group of his followers attacked the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers met to confirm President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

"Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable," Barr announced on Thursday. "The President's conduct yesterday was a betrayal of his office and supporters."

Trump had urged a crowd numbered in the hundreds of thousands to march on Capitol Hill as Congress was established to conduct the task of approving each state's electoral votes.

While some streamed modestly to the building, confusion erupted when scores tried to get in, pressing past barricades and fighting with police. Once inside, lawmakers and media hunkered down or fled while the crowds roamed through the sea of power, some even posting selfies on social media.

“The violence at the Capitol Building is outrageous and despicable. Federal agencies should move immediately to disperse it," Barr announced on Wednesday.

As the turmoil grew, Trump pushed the crowd to "go home in peace" in a set of tweets, though it took the struggles of local and federal authorities and a 6 p.m. curfew to rebuild order. Lawmakers continued the deliberations around 8 p.m. Wednesday, with many criticizing the earlier chaos and laying the blame at Trump's feet.

Other allies of President Trump including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) announced similar calls for masses of radicals to face prosecution for their actions Wednesday, while Trump himself issued a video message repeating his false claim that the 2020 election was "stolen" and asking radicals to leave quietly.

Congress declared Biden's victory just before 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, after which Trump committed to an "orderly transition" of power in two weeks.

Barr, who left his post just before Christmas and was replaced by acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, was a harsh critic of the Trump-Russia investigations, but he declined requests to appoint special counsels to investigate either Hunter Biden or allegations of voter fraud, saying the Justice Department had not found extensive fraud that could change the results of the presidential race.

Barr encountered criticism from Democrats and others over for the aggressive federal response to demonstrations over the summer. He defended the tactics, claiming “violent rioters and anarchists have hijacked legitimate protests."
