The man, identified as Tayler Hansen, claimed he had spoken to 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, a San Diego resident who served four tours with the Air Force, just 10 minutes prior to the shooting in a hallway of the building.
He rejected the notion that Hansen posed a threat to others. "She was literally there just to support her president. She wasn't being violent. She wasn't breaking anything. She just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Hansen said.
Earlier in the day there were huge pro-Trump protests in Washington, D.C., before Congress met to count the Electoral College results and certify President-elect Joe Biden's victory. Around the time lawmakers in the House and Senate began the process, large crowds gathered, at Trump's behest, outside the U.S. Capitol.

Many broke through law enforcement and managed to get into the building. Babbitt was shot and killed by law enforcement amid the violence that prompted lawmakers to evacuate and hunker down.
Hours later, with the U.S. Capitol grounds secured, the delayed certification process resumed.

Ingraham mentioned there were "hard to make out" images or videos circulating the internet which appeared to show Babbitt "at the door" in the moments leading up to the shooting. One video appears to show a woman starting to climb through a broken window before being shot and falling back and onto the floor below.
Hansen stated that a man, who had "started going berserk and punching," was breaking windows on a barricaded door before law enforcement opened fire. Hansen said he heard the shot ring out and saw Babbitt hit the ground.

"By no means was she kicking any doors in or even vandalizing anything," Hansen said of Babbitt, adding later that he stopped filming and joined others in trying to stop the bleeding, but "there was nothing we could do."
Hansen, who said he is a supporter of law enforcement whose "job" is to "infiltrate these people" in places such as Portland, Oregon, suggested the other man was part of antifa based on his behavior.
Babbitt was brought to a nearby hospital after the shooting and later was declared dead. Her husband said she was a "strong supporter of President Trump," according to KUSI News.

D.C. police later announced that three other people died from separate medical emergencies around the Capitol area. Police also said Wednesday evening they made 52 arrests.
"I'm numb. I'm devastated. Nobody from DC notified my son and we found out on TV," her mother-in-law, Robin Babbitt, told the New York Post.
