Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., on Sunday took President-elect Joe Biden to task over his commitment to unify the country but still choose controversial characters to fill his cabinet.

“Biden said he wanted to unify the country,” Cotton wrote on Twitter. “But he’s picked a national security team that is weak on China, a DHS nominee who sold visas for powerful political friends, and a partisan hack who called Susan Collins ‘the worst’ for OMB. So much for unity.”

Cotton's reference to a DHS candidate 'who sold visas' refers to Alejandro Mayorkas, who was President Barack Obama's Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security through his second term.

While serving in that position, he used his role to help foreign investors who were linked to top Democrats with the EB-5 visa program, an Inspector General's report found in 2015.

His reference to a 'partisan hack' pick points to Neera Tanden, who was declared Sunday as Biden's pick for OMB director.

Biden has tapped mainstream Democrats to manage his foreign policy and national security team. Notwithstanding having vast government experience, they have been criticized by some as having poor opinions on China.

Tony Blinken, Biden's pick for Secretary of State, said at a September event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that it was 'unrealistic' for the U.S. to fully decouple from China.

Meanwhile, Biden intends to name Neera Tanden, the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, as director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Tanden, who worked as a senior adviser to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and assisted craft the Affordable Care Act, once described Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, as “the worst.”

Tanden’s poignant critique of Collins appeared in response to the senator’s response to Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s yearbook through the debacle over his Senate confirmation.
