More governors across the country are beginning firm coronavirus limitations as cases continue to rise ahead of Thanksgiving and officials are advising people to drop their usual celebrations.

The new spate of commands and limitations begins after several other states over the weekend announced some of the most severe measures yet throughout the pandemic over concerns about rising cases and tense hospital capacity. Among the harshest -- Oregan forbade indoor gatherings with more than six people from more than two households and Michigan limited gatherings, including Thanksgiving, to just two households.

Those states on Wednesday were joined by Kentucky, Minnesota and Kansas, which announced new restrictions, and in the cases of Minnesota and Kentucky would too firmly alter many families' Thanksgiving traditions.

Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, as he stated more coronavirus restrictions Wednesday, urged people not to celebrate Thanksgiving collectively or to have friends or family come to their houses.

Walz added: "I heard a nurse the other day who was with me and she said 'please stay home over Thanksgiving so you're not celebrating with me in the emergency room.'"

The newly published Minnesota restrictions put a blanket ban on social gatherings even more limiting than the rules in Oregon or Michigan.

"Except as specifically permitted in this Executive Order, social gatherings are prohibited," the Walz executive order says. "Social gatherings are groups of individuals, who are not members of the same household, congregated together for a common or coordinated social, community, or leisure purpose—even if social distancing can be maintained. This prohibition includes indoor and outdoor gatherings, planned and spontaneous gatherings, and public and private gatherings."

This ban covers "outdoor recreational activities where they will come into close proximity with others from different households." Still allowed, according to the order, are hunting, fishing, boating, golf and comparable sports. Sports like soccer and basketball, according to the order, may only be played by people within the same household.

The Walz order takes effect on Friday and also issues closures for restaurants, bars and other similar public establishments. Also forbidden are occasions like birthday parties as well as gatherings after funerals, weddings and religious services, which in themselves must comply with the state’s stringent guidelines.

Democrat Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday further issued his own severe lockdown, restricting social gatherings to a maximum of eight people from two households. Beshear's order also forbids indoor dining, caps capacity at places like theaters and wedding venues and requires companies to mandate that all employees capable of working from home do so.
