Joe Biden is on track to set a record for the most expensive presidential campaign in history, as well as the one to spend the most per vote, as shown by a report by Newsweek on Wednesday.

The Biden campaign raised more than $1.3 billion, amounting to almost $18 per vote.

In a tweeted video, former Vice President Joe Biden said the donations came from 5.5 million donors with an average contribution of about $44.

“To every person who chipped in a few dollars last month — thank you,” Biden wrote on Twitter, sharing a call he had with one of his grassroots supporters. “Because of your support, we raised an astounding $383 million. I’m incredibly humbled.”

They shattered the previous record set by the Hillary Clinton campaign four year ago, when she spent more than $768 million, reaching nearly $12 per vote. That means Biden has spent approximately 50% more for every vote than the second most expensive campaign.

Biden’s expenditure was also far more than that for the campaign this year of President Donald Trump, who spent more than $863 million, which amounted to less than $12 per vote.

Trump had a sizable advantage throughout much of the campaign in cash on hand, which is the amount of money available for a campaign to spend. However, a combination of heavy spending and increased donations sparked by the Democratic National Convention and the addition of Sen. Kamala Harris to the Democratic ticket in August helped Biden's campaign overtake the President's reelection bid by more than $141 million.

After a handful of good fundraising quarters, Biden began closing the cash-on-hand gap with the Trump campaign this summer.

The Biden camp added that he had broken an all-time record for contributions in a one-hour time frame after the first presidential debate last month, netting $3.8 million in just 60 minutes. This comes as the election this year sets the record for the most expensive ever at an estimated $14 billion spent, according to the campaign finance website run by the tax-exempt, charitable organization Center for Responsive Politics- OpenSecrets.org, .

The website detailed that the Biden campaign spent more than 80% of the funds raised for media services, particularly television advertising, while the Trump campaign spent only about 66% on the media.

The rest of Biden campaign funds were allocated to salaries, administration, fundraising activities, and other unclassifiable items.

The final figures on fundraising and expenditure for the presidential campaign will not be available until next month.
