House Speaker Nancy Pelosi still has the power of her office but it is dwindling and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., "certainly wields an enormous amount of power," but House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy could join forces with moderate Democrats to take over the speaker's seat, former Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday.

"I think, depending on the result of these last few seats, that Republican leader McCarthy may actually have an ability to form an alliance with 10 or 12 Democrats who are in districts where they will get wiped out in 2022 unless they find some way to separate," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "If that happens, McCarthy actually will have more maneuvering ability on the floor than will Speaker Pelosi."

Gingrich also predicted that more "radical positions" will come forward with Joe Biden if his win for the White House is confirmed.

"History is very clear," said Gingrich. "If you are a moderate Democrat or even a fairly liberal Democrat, but in a potential swing district, you have to look at that history."

Then, he said, moderate Democrats will need to ask themselves if radical members of the Biden administration will join forces and lead to their party losing control of the House in 2022 and ending with McCarthy, R-Calif., progressing to the speaker's seat.

There will also be challenges for the Biden administration when it "comes out of the basement" because of comments that are already coming out.

"He has a lot of people hidden down there who are very radical and I think frankly they will cost him the two seats to Georgia," said Gingrich. "Radicalism is going to show up."

The 117th Congress will see fewer Democrats after Pelosi's party sustained unexpected losses in the House of Representatives. Polls had widely predicted the Democrats would expand their majority.

Nancy Pelosi herself will likely be re-elected when the new Congress meets on January 3, 2021. No clear challenger has emerged to the California Democrat.

Despite a relatively disappointing election, Pelosi struck an upbeat tone following former Vice President Joe Biden's victory, calling him president-elect even before the major networks had called the race.

"Today marks the dawning of a new day of hope for America," Pelosi said during a Facebook Live broadcast on November 6.

"A record-shattering 75 million Americans cast their ballots to elect Joe Biden President of the United States—a historic victory that has handed Democrats a mandate for action.

"President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect [Kamala] Harris won with a strong margin, and they will have a strong Democratic House Majority by their side," she said.

One of Pelosi's major challenges in the next Congress will be the divisions between progressives and moderates in her own party, which have recently been brought into sharp focus following comments by Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) on potential court-packing.
