Seven states and one congressional district are still hovering in the electoral balance as the country anxiously awaits the final results of the 2020 race.

The 2020 election was held amid the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in more ballots than ever being cast by mail.

Each of the 50 states has its own set of complex election laws — many of which have been taken up in courts across the country as states engage with a wave of mail-in voting for the first time.

Voters nationwide have their eyes fixed on races still being counted in Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Also being watched is Maine’s 2nd Congressional District because the state does not award Electoral College votes on a winner-take-all basis.

Alaska has three electoral votes, and Trump is currently leading Biden 61 percent to 34 percent. The state mailed an absentee ballot to every voter 65 and older.

In Michigan, Trump and Biden are neck-and-neck in the must-win state, which has 16 electoral votes.

Georgia, with its 16 electoral votes, has become one of the most talked-about states in this presidential cycle, with Democrats hoping to flip the long-held red state to blue. State election officials stopped counting ballots last night, with plans to resume counting Wednesday morning. There is no order to what type of ballot is being counted first.

In Nevada, the candidates are facing an extremely tight race in the state.

In North Carolina, there are 15 electoral votes up for grabs, and it is not clear who will claim them as the two candidates remain locked in a dead heat.

Pennsylvania, with its 20 electoral votes, never planned to have final results on election night.

The final deadline to guarantee the election results is Nov. 23, though it is not expected to require nearly that much time.

In Wisconsin, officials are still counting votes and thus not able to indicate a winner.

The state, with 10 electoral votes, is following a ruling made late last month by the Supreme Court, which voted 5-3 to deny a lower court’s ruling that delayed Wisconsin’s deadline for accepting absentee ballots.

In Maine 2nd Congressional District, the district is still in play, despite the fact that three of the four electoral votes have already gone to Biden. There is no order to how the state counts its ballots, which means there will not be an advantage to either contestant in terms of how the votes come in.

The state expects to have the final votes counted by Wednesday, after counting resumes in the morning.
