Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's personal attorney, said he is "en route" to Philadelphia with the Trump campaign legal team, vowing to protect the vote and "not let" Democrats "steal" Pennsylvania in the 2020 presidential race as the ballot battle intensifies.

"En route to Philadelphia with a legal team. Massive cheating," Giuliani tweeted Wednesday. "@realDonaldTrump up by 550,000 with 75% counted." He added: "Will not let Philly Democrat hacks steal it!"

The Trump campaign announced a press conference in Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon, featuring the president's son, Eric Trump, Lara Trump, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and campaign senior adviser Corey Lewandowski.

Meanwhile, Trump on Wednesday claimed he is winning “big” in Pennsylvania, noting that votes are still being counted.

“We are winning Pennsylvania big, but the PA Secretary of State just announced that there are ‘Millions of ballots left to be counted,’” Trump tweeted.

Pennsylvania has 20 electoral votes up for grabs, and is a place where the Trump campaign claims Trump “maintains a lead,” while noting earlier Wednesday that “a healthy number of ballots still to be counted statewide in excess of a million.”

No candidate can credibly claim to have won as yet, and both campaigns said they had potential paths to victory.

Nevertheless, Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien states the campaign has “confidence” in the state, and looking at numbers, even with a “conservative estimate,” it believes the president could win by at least 40,000 votes — even if Philadelphia votes for Democratic nominee Biden in large numbers.

Mr Trump himself, alleged in a tweet that there had been "surprise ballot dumps", causing his lead in several states to disappear, without providing any evidence. Twitter labelled the tweet as possibly disputed and misleading.

At an election night gathering at the White House, the president said there was "major fraud" and "we'll be going to the US Supreme Court", again without providing evidence.

A Biden campaign official said they, too, are confident in Pennsylvania and expect the results — specifically with Philadelphia’s large vote-by-mail results — to be announced later Wednesday or early Thursday. They add that the race is "moving to a conclusion in our favour".

The Biden campaign said it expected to win because several states would be called for them on Wednesday or Thursday, but the Trump campaign said it was confident that the maths was in its favour.

Mr Biden is expected to address the nation later today. He tweeted: "We won't rest until everyone's vote is counted."

Several key states are expected to finish counting by the end of Wednesday but the election may not be decided for days.

The US is on course for the highest electoral turnout in a century. More than 100 million people cast their ballots in early voting before election day, and tens of millions more added their vote on Tuesday.

The vote tallies in the Rust Belt battlegrounds of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin - which propelled Mr Trump to the White House four years ago - are very close.
