A man accused of kidnapping a woman in Seattle and holding her captive in a cinder block cell in his Oregon home attempted to escape from jail on Tuesday, according to reports from KIRO-TV.

Negasi Zuberi, 29, was apprehended by corrections officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office as he tried to break through the glass of his cell window. The incident was brought to the attention of deputies by a maintenance worker who heard a suspicious noise coming from one of the cells. Zuberi was found near the chipped window on his bunk bed, with an improvised tool believed to be used in the escape attempt.

Following the incident, Zuberi was transferred to a windowless cell. He had been in jail on a federal hold for interstate kidnapping and now faces additional charges of second-degree attempted escape and first-degree disorderly conduct.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office provided an update on the incident via Facebook, stating that Zuberi had only managed to damage the interior layer of the reinforced glass window. The update also mentioned that Zuberi underwent a full-body scan after the incident.

Zuberi's alleged crimes began on July 15 when he picked up a prostitute from a known sex work area in Seattle. After engaging in sexual acts, Zuberi claimed to be an undercover police officer and restrained the woman with handcuffs and leg irons. He then drove her back to his home in Klamath Falls, Oregon, a journey that took approximately 7 hours. Along the way, he sexually assaulted her multiple times.

Upon reaching his house, Zuberi placed the woman in a cinder block cell with metal bar doors, instructing her to stay there while he attended to paperwork. Realizing the danger she was in, the woman managed to break out by damaging the welded joints of the door. She then discovered Zuberi's vehicle in the garage and armed herself with a firearm found inside. Escaping the house, she flagged down a passing driver and called 911.

Investigators discovered the woman's purse at Zuberi's residence, along with handwritten notes outlining his alleged plans. One note, in particular, read: "Make sure they don't have a bunch of people in their life. You don't want any type of investigation." Stephanie Shark, assistant special agent of the FBI, commended the woman's quick thinking and will to survive, suggesting that her actions may have prevented similar nightmares for other women.

The FBI suspects that there may be additional victims and has appealed to the public for assistance in identifying them.
