Vice President Kamala Harris is preparing to meet Democrat lawmakers Friday in five states where abortion is supposed to be restricted shortly, according to The Washington Post.

Her scheduled visit arrives about three weeks after the Supreme Court overturned the almost 50-year Roe precedent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, sending the abortion issue back to states.

Harris is slated to visit Indiana, Florida, South Dakota, Nebraska and Montana, all of which have indicated backing for further limitations to the procedure.

Among the notable names in attendance will be Indiana House Minority Leader Phil GiaQuinta, South Dakota House Minority Whip Erin Healy, and incoming Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell.

The meetings, live-streamed publicly from the vice president's ceremonial office, are part of the Biden administration's wider part assigned to Harris of taking leadership on abortion-related matters in the aftermath of the Dobbs choice.

Thus far, the vice president has reportedly held meetings with faith leaders, healthcare providers, constitutional lawyers and privacy specialists to prepare new ways of assuring abortion access nationwide, including access to medically-induced abortion.

Professor Jessie Hill of Case Western Reserve University explained to CBS News that the Justice Department could use the Food and Drug Administration's superior jurisdiction over states to protect access to abortion pills like mifepristone.

"The idea here would be the federal government has said mifepristone is safe and effective and given it a license to be sold in every state in the U.S.," Hill proposed. "No state can turn around and forbid it."

However, "one of the challenges is you have to show a clear conflict, and it's not obvious there is one," she went on. "It's very unsettled, but there could be some hurdles with a lawsuit like that."

Biden and Harris have told voters they should show their anger at the surveys this November and give Democrats the legislative majorities they have to enshrine abortion access into federal law. Yet those exhortations ring hollow for some activists who say their votes handed Democrats control the White House and both chambers of Congress in 2020 and they have been disappointed in the outcome.

Biden has announced his administration would attempt to guarantee access to medication abortions, which can be prescribed through telehealth visits and induced by pills sent in the mail, potentially skirting state abortion restrictions. The administration has further attempted to find ways to help women cross state lines to obtain an abortion.

Harris had initial reservations regarding becoming the face of the administration’s response, concerned she could be pigeonholed on the matter because of her gender, according to people familiar with the discussions who spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose a sensitive dynamic. Eventually, she chose to take on the matter and is expected to play a prominent part in the following months.
