In a statement Thursday, Mr. Kelly’s office categorically denied the accusations.

“Senator Johnson’s statements about Representative Kelly are patently false. Mr. Kelly has not spoken to Sen. Johnson for the better part of a decade, and he has no knowledge of the claims Mr. Johnson is making related to the 2020 election,” the statement said.

In the interview, Mr. Johnson called his involvement “so minimal.” “I really had no recollection of any specifics whatsoever, OK,” he said, saying the committee’s findings are a “nothing burger.” Mr. Johnson avoided reporters Thursday following revelations at the special hearing.

Windsor kept pushing the senator, asking if it was frequent that his chief of staff conducted business without making Johnson aware. Johnson echoed his opinion that the list came from Kelly. When asked whether the senator played a role in attempting to overturn the election results, Johnson initially told Windsor that he played a "two-minute role" before adjusting his answer and saying he had no role. He also told the activist to "go away."

The reporter pushed a final time by asking why the senator still employed Riley. Johnson did not directly reply before fading through an emergency exit.

Alexa Henning, Johnson's spokeswoman, said the senator was willing to talk and be respectful toward anyone who had questions but that rude behavior should be condemned by Democrats.

"What is unfortunate is that Democrat leaders have encouraged this type of disrespectful encounter," Henning told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "Democrat leaders bear the responsibility to condemn this behavior before it turns violent."
Windsor previously met Johnson in 2021 at a Republican event in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where she filmed Johnson asserting that "there's nothing obviously skewed about the results" of the 2020 election in Wisconsin, according to the report.
