The president visited the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 training facility in Howell on Tuesday in an effort to gain backing for a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and his larger Build Back Better agenda, which covers a proposed $3.5 trillion reconciliation package. After praising Whitmer for being "one of the best governors in the United States of America," he added an odd remark about Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist.
"And her lieutenant governor who covers her in every way, both in terms of physically, and mentally, and every other way," Biden stated.

Biden has a history of verbal miscues and errors in his speeches. It was announced last month that some White House staffers have even resorted to muting him on TV or turning off his public appearances altogether to evade confusion or potential embarrassment.

"These bills are not about left versus right or moderate versus progressive or anything that pits Americans against one another," Biden announced. "These bills are about competitiveness versus complacency. They’re about opportunity versus decay. They’re about leading the world or continuing to let the world pass us by, which is literally happening."

The president stated the nation was at an "inflection point," and opponents of the legislation would be "complicit in America’s decline." He described the proposals as necessary to advancing "economic competition" with other nations.

The United States has "taken our foot off the gas," Biden said, and other nations are "closing the gap in a big way."

"Our children and our grandchildren are going to be in debt for basically eternity now,” remarked Meghan Reckling, chairwoman of the Livingston County Republican Party.
The venue for Biden's speech was held outside with a small subset of chairs, with roughly 40 people in attendance. Democratic U.S. Reps. Andy Levin of Bloomfield Township, Debbie Dingell of Dearborn, and Dan Kildee of Flint Township likewise attended, sitting in the front row, according to the Detroit News.
