University of Washington (UW) students have declared their intention to establish a "Gaza Camp" in protest against Israel's conflict with Hamas.

The announcement comes in response to criticism that the movement lacked sufficient Arab or Muslim leadership.

The "UW Palestine Encampment" is scheduled to be set up on Monday at 8 am in the university's quad, coinciding with the final days of Passover. The initiative was initially publicized on social media, where it was met with a mixed response.

Critics questioned the lack of involvement from Palestinian organizations and students, with one comment reading, "Were there any conversations with Palestinian orgs or students about this encampment?" Another critic asked, "Why is there no Arab or Muslim leadership? This is the only page I have seen this posted, which leads me to believe that no other orgs endorse this action. This is dangerous and weird to be honest."

In response to the criticism, the activists decided to delay the establishment of the camp, stating that they wanted to ensure it better reflected the UW community and fostered greater unity with Muslim, Palestinian, and Arab students.

The student protestors have called on UW to "end US aid to Israel, cut ties with Boeing, and divest and materially cut ties with Israel." They have also demanded an end to the Jewish state of Israel.

UW will join a growing list of U.S. colleges that have established similar Gaza Camps. These camps have seen a surge in support for Hamas from students and faculty, leading to threats against Jewish community members on campus.

The University of Washington is currently under investigation by the US Department of Education for allegations of antisemitism.
