Donalds’s decision to run for governor has opened a rare vacancy in a GOP stronghold that includes Cape Coral and Naples, according to Just The News. The open seat has drawn a crowded field, many of whom only recently established residency in the district to compete for a place in the House.
Activist Catalina Lauf is making her third attempt at a congressional seat after two failed bids in Illinois, and this time she enters the race with the powerful backing of President Donald Trump, who has endorsed her. Among the most recognizable names is former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., who “lost his primary for reelection in 2022 after a series of scandals.”
Also in the running is former Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., who “previously represented a now-defunct New York district and also served time in prison for insider trading before being pardoned by President Donald Trump.” Former Illinois state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Ill., who “previously ran against Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., for Senate there,” is likewise seeking a fresh start in Florida’s conservative terrain.
Actor John Strand, “for his part, was present for the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol,” a credential likely to resonate with voters skeptical of the Biden Justice Department’s prosecutions. Linda Sawyer, who “previously ran for Congress in Michigan,” and Olwa Hawatmeh, who “previously sought a House seat from New York,” further underscore how the race has attracted political migrants.
Greg Bukowski, who “recently moved to the area from Texas and has embraced the nickname of ‘Tex’ for the campaign,” joins former Marine Mike Pedersen, who “while not a native of the area, has lived in Cape Coral for 26 years, according to NPR,” in appealing to local sensibilities despite their origins. The lone native son in the field is businessman Jim Schwartzel, whose roots may appeal to voters wary of carpetbaggers even as national conservative figures and President Trump’s endorsements shape the outcome of this high-stakes primary.
