Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing intensifying scrutiny amid allegations that she intervened in an official Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) after-action report to minimize the city’s responsibility for last year’s deadly wildfires.

According to the Gateway Pundit, critics argue that Bass’s actions, if confirmed, reflect a broader pattern of Democrat leaders prioritizing political damage control over accountability and competent governance. As reported by the Gateway Pundit, both Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom have already been sharply criticized for their handling of the fires and the glaring lack of meaningful rebuilding efforts more than a year after the catastrophe that claimed 31 lives.

The controversy escalated after a Los Angeles Times investigation alleged that Bass “successfully altered in her favor a critical after-action report on the devastating southern California wildfires that killed 31 people.” The paper, citing two unnamed sources, reported that Bass feared the city could face legal exposure for its lack of preparedness and therefore “removed or softened language implicating the city.”

One of the most serious alleged edits involved changing language about failures to fully staff and deploy resources in the days leading up to the blaze, a lapse that has been under intense public and legal scrutiny. The report also cites a “Bass confidant” who said “the mayor didn’t tell the truth when she said she had nothing to do with changing the report,” a claim that directly contradicts Bass’s public denials.

Bass has repeatedly insisted she did not interfere with the LAFD document and has rejected the accuracy of the reporting. She has also been criticized for flying to Africa for an event just days before the fire erupted, despite hazardous conditions in the forecast and explicit warnings about heightened fire risks.

In a recent video response, Bass dismissed the allegations, insisting that “this is all made up.” For many residents and observers, that explanation falls far short of the transparency and accountability expected from a big-city mayor in the wake of a mass-casualty disaster.

The political fallout extends beyond Bass, with Governor Newsom likewise under fire for the state’s preparedness failures and the sluggish pace of recovery. For conservatives who have long warned about the consequences of one-party rule, the wildfires and their aftermath underscore why “Both Bass and Newsom should have resigned right after the fires. Their performance and the aftermath have been a total disgrace.”
