Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is doubling down on his claim that basic voter-identification requirements amount to “Jim Crow 2.0,” even as polling shows that most Democratic voters disagree with him.

As reported by WND, Schumer appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” with host Jonathan Lemire, who cited an August Pew Research survey showing that 71% of Democratic voters support voter ID and pressed the New York Democrat on why he remains opposed. Schumer insisted that requiring identification at the polls would block racial minorities and women from voting, alleging that this is precisely what Republicans intend.

“It’s Jim Crow 2.0, and I called it Jim Crow 2.0 and the right wing went nuts all over the internet. That’s because they know it’s true. What they’re trying to do here is the same thing that was done in the South for decades to prevent people of color from voting. For instance, if you’re a woman who got married and changed your last name, you won’t be able to show ID and you’ll be discriminated against. If you can’t find a birth certificate or a proper ID, you’ll be discriminated against,” Schumer said. He framed routine documentation requirements as a form of systemic bias, despite the fact that identification is already required for everyday activities such as boarding a plane, buying certain medications, or entering federal buildings.

“This is vicious and nasty and I said to our Republican colleagues, it will not pass the Senate,” Schumer continued. “You will not get a single Democratic vote in the Senate. We’re not reviving Jim Crow all over the country. And when the American people hear what exactly it is doing and what its intent is doing, they’re going to be against it as well.” His rhetoric comes as Republicans push the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote in U.S. elections.

Democrats have branded the SAVE Act a “voter suppression” measure, arguing it would disenfranchise those who lack ready access to documents such as a passport or birth certificate. The bill passed the House in April with the support of only four Democrats but has since stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate, where Schumer has vowed to block it.

Across the developed world, voter ID is standard practice, with most European nations requiring government-issued identification at the polls, and the United Kingdom recently adopting photo ID rules after years as an outlier, according to SSRN. Even CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten acknowledged this week that overwhelming majorities of every major racial group in the United States support voter ID, including 85% of white voters, 82% of Latinos and 76% of black Americans, underscoring how far Democratic leadership has drifted from both international norms and the views of ordinary citizens.
