The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is set to join forces with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a bid to track down illegal immigrants slated for deportation, utilizing taxpayer data to aid in this endeavor.

This collaboration marks a significant shift in the IRS's stance, as it had previously resisted sharing such sensitive information, citing legal concerns over the confidentiality of personal tax data.

As reported by The Post Millennial, a draft agreement between the IRS and ICE suggests that the tax agency will assist in verifying the home addresses of individuals ordered to leave the United States. This move comes after the Trump administration's strategic replacement of the IRS's chief legal officer, which has reignited discussions on a more limited scale of cooperation.

The proposal is said to focus on confirming existing information rather than broadly sharing tax records. The Washington Post, having examined parts of the draft, noted that ICE's requests would be limited to confirming addresses of illegal immigrants already ordered to depart the country. These requests would be made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem or Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, including details such as the individual's name, address, and removal order date.

Federal law does permit the sharing of tax information with law enforcement under specific conditions, and this collaboration could potentially enhance the efficiency of immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security has previously sought the IRS's involvement in its efforts, even suggesting audits of businesses suspected of employing illegal immigrants.

This development underscores the administration's commitment to upholding immigration laws and ensuring that those who violate them are held accountable.
