In a significant development within the Department of the Treasury, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, the two IRS investigators who brought to light the intricacies of the investigation into Hunter Biden, have ascended to senior positions.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Tuesday that Shapley and Ziegler will now serve as senior advisers for IRS reform, with Shapley also taking on the role of deputy chief of IRS criminal investigations.

As reported by The Washington Free Beacon, this announcement follows the decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden. Trump claimed that Biden was accompanied by up to 18 Secret Service agents during a recent vacation to South Africa.

The promotion of Shapley and Ziegler comes in the wake of their pivotal disclosures to Congress in 2023, which shed light on the federal investigation into Hunter Biden that commenced in 2018. The investigators accused officials within the IRS and the Department of Justice of compromising the investigation for political reasons and alleged that their removal from the case in May 2023 was retaliatory, following their whistleblower disclosures.

Shapley and Ziegler provided Congress with a trove of emails and financial documents, revealing that Hunter Biden had evaded millions in taxes from business ventures in Ukraine, Romania, and China. They disclosed that Biden had deducted substantial personal expenses, including payments for vehicles, escorts, and a $10,000 membership fee for a Los Angeles sex club, from his taxes. Additionally, they unveiled text messages sent by Hunter Biden to Chinese business partners, which contradicted former President Joe Biden’s assertions of having no knowledge of his son's foreign business dealings.

The revelations by Shapley and Ziegler spurred Special Counsel David Weiss to adopt a more assertive stance in his investigation. Initially, Weiss was prepared to offer Hunter Biden a plea deal involving misdemeanor charges for tax evasion and a deferred felony prosecution for a gun-related offense. However, following the whistleblowers' disclosures, Weiss pursued felony charges against Biden for both tax evasion and falsifying information on firearm purchase forms. Although Hunter Biden was convicted in both cases, his father, Joe Biden, granted him a pardon on December 2, mere weeks before his sentencing.

In a statement released through Empower Oversight, a watchdog group representing them, Shapley and Ziegler expressed their commitment to their roles: "We have been motivated by one singular mantra: do what’s right. It’s never been easy, and there have been more pitfalls than one would hope, but we appreciate the opportunity Secretary Bessent is giving us to utilize our skills and firsthand knowledge of the agency to further the work of the administration to root out waste and fraud from the federal government and make a difference."

The elevation of Shapley and Ziegler to senior advisory roles underscores the administration's focus on addressing inefficiencies and misconduct within federal agencies. Their firsthand experience and insights into the IRS investigation are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency within the government.
