In a significant development for border security, the first contract for constructing a border wall under President Donald Trump's second term has been unveiled, with a price tag of approximately $70 million.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the awarding of this contract, valued at $70,285,846, to Granite Construction Co., a company based in Watsonville, California. The project involves the construction of roughly seven miles of new border wall in Hidalgo County, Texas, within the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector.

According to the Daily Caller, the new wall aims to seal off "critical openings in the border wall that were left incomplete due to cancelled contracts during the Biden Administration." These gaps have been exploited by illegal migrants, human traffickers, and drug smugglers, highlighting the urgent need for completion in the RGV sector, as emphasized by CBP. This contract follows a series of executive orders from President Trump, which declared a national emergency at the southern border and directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take all necessary actions to secure the U.S. borders.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem recently visited the southern border, underscoring the administration's commitment to border security. "Everybody, I’m here in Arizona, and right at this spot you can see where the border wall ends," she stated in a video message. "As of today, we’re starting seven new miles of construction. We’re going to continue to make America safe again." This sentiment aligns with the administration's broader strategy to fortify the southern border and ensure national security.

Vice President JD Vance, along with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, also made a joint visit to the southern border. When questioned by The Daily Caller about the extent of the wall the Trump administration plans to construct, Vance expressed the administration's ambition to complete the entire wall. This initiative builds on the 450 miles of "new border wall system" completed by early January 2021, as noted by the Department of Homeland Security.

In stark contrast, former President Joe Biden had terminated Trump's 2019 national emergency declaration at the southern border and halted wall construction, dismissing the idea of walling off the entire border as "not a serious policy solution" and labeling the national emergency as "unwarranted." This decision prompted legal challenges from Missouri and Texas, with Missouri securing a court order to restore $1.4 billion in funding for the construction effort.

While congressional investigators later deemed the suspension of the border wall contract legal, the ruling faced opposition from Republican lawmakers, as reported by CBS News. Notably, encounters at the southern border have dropped to levels not seen since the 1980s by the second month of Trump's second term, suggesting a potential impact of the administration's renewed focus on border security.
