A recent CNN poll has revealed a significant decline in the popularity of the Democratic Party, with their favorability ratings hitting an all-time low.

The party's opposition to President Donald Trump, who won the popular vote, their obstruction of his agenda aimed at reducing government waste, fraud, and abuse, and their threat to shut down the government by rejecting their own President Joe Biden-era spending levels in a continuing resolution, have not been well-received by registered Democrats and left-leaning independent adults.

According to CNN, even a majority of Democrat adults (52%) believe that the party's leadership is steering things in the wrong direction. This is a stark contrast to the sentiment eight years ago at the start of the first Trump administration when the majority felt otherwise.

The Democrats' favorability has plummeted 20 points since January 2021 when Biden first took office after Jan. 6, now standing at a dismal 29% – a record low since 1992 when former President Bill Clinton defeated incumbent President George H.W. Bush. The Republican Party had held the White House for three full terms through former President Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush before Clinton's election in 1992.

The poll also revealed that Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents have a mere 63% favorability towards their own leaders, a significant drop from 72% in January and 81% at the start of the Biden administration. In contrast, Republicans appear to be more satisfied with their leaders, with 79% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents expressing a favorable view of Republicans.

House GOP Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has labeled Democrats as "leaderless" and "rudderless," a sentiment echoed by those polled. When asked who among Democrats "best reflects the core values" of the party (with no names and just a blank space to respond), 30% did not name someone.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was named by 10%, followed by former Vice President Kamala Harris with 9%, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 8%, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., with 6%, former President Barack Obama with 4%, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, with 4%, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tied with many others at 2%.

The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS from March 6-9 among 1,206 U.S. adults, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. In the Democrats' sub-sample of 504, the margin of error is plus or minus 5.0 percentage points.

This decline in favorability ratings for the Democrats is a clear indication of the dissatisfaction among their base and left-leaning independents. The party's opposition to the popular-vote winner, President Donald Trump, and their obstruction of his agenda to cut government waste, fraud, and abuse, have not resonated well with their supporters. The threat to shut down the government by rejecting their own President Joe Biden-era spending levels in a continuing resolution has further exacerbated this dissatisfaction.

The party's leadership is also under scrutiny, with a majority of Democrat adults feeling that it is taking things in the wrong direction. This sentiment is reflected in the significant drop in favorability towards their own leaders among Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents. The party's struggle to identify a figure who best reflects its core values further underscores the challenges it faces.

The Republicans, on the other hand, appear to be more united and satisfied with their leaders. This contrast in favorability ratings between the two parties could have significant implications for future elections. The Democrats will need to address these issues and regain the trust of their base if they hope to improve their standing and electoral prospects.
