Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that he is likely to decide on the successor for Marco Rubio's U.S. Senate seat by early January.

This comes after President-elect Donald Trump selected Rubio as his choice for U.S. Secretary of State, a move that will likely result in Rubio's resignation before Trump's inauguration on January 20th.

According to American Military News, Governor DeSantis' office has already begun the process of vetting potential candidates. While he did not provide specific names, he did confirm that there has been "strong interest from several possible candidates." Among the speculated contenders are prominent figures within the Republican party, including Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Trump and co-chair of the Republican National Committee.

Other potential candidates include James Uthmeier, DeSantis' chief of staff, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, outgoing Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and former state House Speaker Jose Oliva. The selection process is guided by DeSantis' belief that "Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results."

Florida law empowers Governor DeSantis to temporarily appoint a replacement to fill the Senate vacancy until the next general election in 2026. The appointee would then need to secure a victory in the 2028 elections to serve a full term.

Lara Trump, wife of Eric Trump, has emerged as a strong contender, with vocal support from President-elect Trump's allies. Florida Senator Rick Scott publicly endorsed her last week, a sentiment echoed by other staunch Trump supporters such as Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna.

Lara Trump has expressed her willingness to take on Rubio's seat if asked, but has not yet been approached by DeSantis. "If I were tapped for this, serving my home state, now, of Florida, it’s a great honor and a great responsibility, obviously, but I would love to be able to go forward and do more," she stated in an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo.

James Uthmeier, the governor’s chief of staff and DeSantis’ presidential campaign manager, is also a potential candidate. While he has not publicly expressed interest in the position, he is perceived as a candidate who would align more closely with DeSantis' sphere than Trump's.

The decision on Rubio's successor will undoubtedly have significant implications for Florida and the nation. As the process unfolds, the focus remains on selecting a candidate who embodies conservative principles and can effectively serve the interests of Florida's citizens.
