The selection process is guided by DeSantis' belief that "Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results."
Florida law empowers Governor DeSantis to temporarily appoint a replacement to fill the Senate vacancy until the next general election in 2026. The appointee would then need to secure a victory in the 2028 elections to serve a full term.
Lara Trump, wife of Eric Trump, has emerged as a strong contender, with vocal support from President-elect Trump's allies.
