In a surprising turn of events, former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz has hinted at a potential gubernatorial run.

This comes just days after he withdrew his name from the list of contenders for the position of Attorney General under President-elect Donald Trump. Gaetz, a 42-year-old Republican, stirred speculation by posting a GIF of the Florida state flag on social media platform X, a move interpreted by many as a sign of his openness to the gubernatorial race.

According to The New York Post, Gaetz's post was a response to a statement by ex-Florida House Representative Anthony Sabatini, who confidently declared, "Gaetz will be the next Governor of the State of Florida." With current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unable to seek re-election due to term limits, the field is wide open for potential successors.

On Thursday, Gaetz publicly announced his withdrawal from the race for the Justice Department's top spot. This decision sparked a flurry of speculation among Republicans, with many wondering if he would attempt to reclaim his House seat or pursue a different political role. Some even suggested that Gaetz might lobby to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate once Rubio resigns to assume the role of Trump's Secretary of State.

Gaetz's resignation from the 118th Congress was immediate, following Trump's announcement of his selection as Attorney General on November 13. However, he did not rule out the possibility of returning to his seat in the 119th Congress, which is set to convene on January 3.

Should Gaetz decide to return to the House, he will face an ongoing ethics investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, charges he has vehemently denied. Meanwhile, DeSantis has scheduled a special election for April 1, 2025, to fill Gaetz's vacant seat in Florida's 1st congressional district. As the political landscape continues to shift, all eyes will be on Gaetz's next move.
