A peaceful memorial service was shattered by gunfire last Friday at the Salvation Army Cross Generations Worship and Community Center in Blue Island, Illinois, as reported by CBS News.

The service was held in honor of 19-year-old Princess Jamya Bell, who tragically lost her life in a shooting incident in Chicago on June 3. Bell, an unintended casualty of the shooting, was killed alongside an 18-year-old acquaintance.

According to CBS News, the chaos unfolded around 3:30 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up to the community center and multiple assailants began firing at the building where Bell's memorial service was taking place. A service attendee, who was legally carrying a concealed weapon, retaliated by firing back at the attackers.

Kenneth Allison, Bell's grieving grandmother, described the horrific scene as "mayhem." "There's a lot of young people, and they're upset because my granddaughter — you know, they loved her — and then, of course, some of her friends are wanting revenge," Allison told CBS News. "So I guess this is all retaliation."

The violent attack left four people injured, according to the news outlet. Two of the victims were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, while a third victim was critically injured. A fourth individual, also wounded, reportedly made their own way to Roseland Community Hospital. The exact circumstances surrounding their involvement are still being confirmed by authorities.

As the night wore on, police continued their investigation into the shocking incident. A man possibly linked to the shooting was taken into custody, CBS News reported. However, details regarding charges or the full extent of the incident remain uncertain. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for effective strategies to curb gun violence and protect innocent lives.
