A coalition of House Republicans, led by Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, is advocating for the Congressional Gold Medal to be awarded to former President Donald Trump.

The move comes as Trump faces a trial over 34 counts of falsifying business records related to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign, charges he vehemently denies.

The resolution, which Luna is spearheading, seeks to honor Trump "in recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedication to strengthening America’s diplomatic relations during his presidency," as stated in the legislative text. The initiative has garnered the support of six other House Republican representatives, including Lauren Boebert, Andy Ogles, Randy Weber, Mike Waltz, and Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler, as reported by Fox News. Politico also reports that Congresswoman Mary Miller has expressed support for the move.

Luna attributes Trump's eligibility for the medal to his "fearless leadership," which she believes reestablished the United States as a globally respected power. "It is time we recognize a president who put our country first and secured global peace through bold diplomacy,” Luna stated. She further criticized the liberal media for spreading fear, asserting that "America and the world were undoubtedly safer under President Donald Trump."

The resolution is co-sponsored by House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, who initially supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the presidency and only shifted his support to Trump after DeSantis withdrew from the race. Good lauded Trump's achievements during his term, stating, "President Trump did more in four years on behalf of the American people than any president in my lifetime. He secured our border, achieved historic peace in the Middle East, and implemented policies that helped our economy prosper," according to Fox News.

Both Ogles and Weber praised Trump's significant contributions to America. Ogles commended Trump's "stalwart defense of the American way of life,” while Weber stated that "every patriotic American knows our country was unequivocally better off four years ago under his stewardship."

The Congressional Gold Medal, which has been awarded since the American Revolution, is a symbol of national appreciation for significant achievements and contributions to the country. If Trump were to receive the honor, he would join a prestigious list of recipients, including Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, and Rosa Parks. The award recognizes contributions in various fields, including military, athletics, public service, entertainment, science, and civil rights.

Trump would not be the first U.S. president to receive the award. The inaugural medal was awarded to George Washington, albeit before his presidency. However, the last president to receive the medal was Ronald Reagan in 2000.

While the resolution may gain traction in the Republican-led House, its chances of survival in the Democratic-majority Senate appear slim.
