Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, has voiced his support for the student-led protests taking place across American college campuses in opposition to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In a recent interview with CNN, Sanders suggested that President Biden's backing of Israel could potentially weaken his political and moral standing.

Sanders drew parallels between the current situation and the Vietnam War era, stating, "This may be Biden's Vietnam." He referenced the political fallout faced by President Lyndon Johnson, who despite his domestic achievements, chose not to seek re-election in 1968 due to widespread opposition to his stance on the Vietnam War.

Sanders expressed concern that Biden's position on the Israel-Hamas conflict could alienate not only the youth but also a significant portion of the Democratic base. As Biden's re-election campaign gains momentum, he finds himself in a precarious position, trying to appease both pro and anti-Israel factions within the Democratic Party.

The Israel-Hamas conflict has further deepened the political divide between Republicans and Democrats. While Republican support for the conflict has dipped from 71% in November to 64% in March, it remains significantly higher than Democratic approval, which plummeted to a mere 18%, with a staggering 75% disapproval rate.

Sanders also took aim at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's handling of the war against Hamas. "I happen to believe, not everyone agrees with me, that the war policies of the Netanyahu government are a disaster," Sanders stated. He argued that these policies were causing unprecedented harm and were in violation of both international and American law.

Sanders urged Biden to reconsider his support for Netanyahu, highlighting the political vulnerability it has created domestically. "So I would hope very much that from certainly a policy point of view, from a moral point of view, that the president stops giving a blank check to Netanyahu," Sanders said. He added, "I would hope that they understand that from a political point of view this has not been helpful. Quite the contrary."
