In a dramatic turn of events, Neha Patel, the wife of Dharmesh Patel, a doctor accused of driving his family off a cliff in a Tesla during a psychotic episode, has made a plea for her husband's release from jail.

She has requested that he be placed under a mental health program instead.

The incident occurred on January 2, 2023, when the Patel family's vehicle plummeted 250ft down Devil’s Slide near San Francisco. Dharmesh Patel, 42, was subsequently arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder, targeting his wife and their two children, aged nine and five.

Speaking to the court for the first time on Thursday, Neha Patel expressed the emotional turmoil her children are experiencing due to their father's absence. "He [their son] wished daddy would magically appear on St. Patrick’s Day when he saw a rainbow," she shared, highlighting the emotional pain the children are enduring.

Neha Patel has urged prosecutors to dismiss the criminal charges against her husband, a radiologist, who has pleaded not guilty. Despite the family's miraculous survival from the crash, she sustained severe injuries. She initially informed first responders that her husband was "depressed" and had intentionally driven off the cliff.

According to The Mercury News, Neha Patel attributed her husband's actions to "a mental health episode beyond any of our understanding or control." She emphasized the family's need for him, stating, "We’re not a family without him." She also assured the court that "things will be different" if her husband is allowed to return home.

The defense attorneys have requested the San Mateo County Superior Court judge to admit Dharmesh Patel into a mental health diversion program. This two-year treatment, if completed, could result in the dismissal of his charges. Neha Patel pledged to seek help when necessary under this plan, which partially relies on the family reporting any signs of mental instability to the court.

During his trial last week, two doctors testified for the defense that Dharmesh Patel was undergoing a psychotic episode at the time of the crash. They stated that he feared his children might be victims of sex trafficking, fueled by delusions related to Jeffrey Epstein and concerns about Russia's war in Ukraine and the fentanyl crisis.

However, San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe, citing other doctors' findings, argued that Dharmesh Patel has schizoaffective disorder, rendering the treatment program ineffective. Wagstaffe is opposing Patel's admission to the program, highlighting the lack of oversight in mental health diversion.

San Mateo County prosecutors have filed motions opposing Dharmesh Patel's entry into the mental health diversion program. The closing arguments are scheduled for May 10.
