In a damning new poll, President Joe Biden has been identified as the least popular commander in chief at this juncture of his presidency in the past seven decades, even falling below Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.

This revelation could potentially jeopardize his prospects for re-election.

The esteemed Gallup Poll, released on Friday, found that Biden, aged 81, had a disheartening job approval rating of 38.7% for the first quarter of 2024. This figure is three points lower than that of George H.W. Bush, a one-term president, at the same stage of his presidency.

The pollsters concluded, "With about six months remaining before Election Day, Biden stands in a weaker position than any prior incumbent."

In comparison, former President Donald Trump, who is currently competing with Biden for a second term in the White House, had a 46.8% approval rating at this point in his presidency.

Even Nixon and Carter had higher ratings than Biden, with 53.7% and 47.7% respectively, and Eisenhower had the highest rating at 72.3%, according to the poll.

Gallup’s presidential approval polls, which have been compiled since Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency in 1952, have historically been a strong indicator of re-election success. Over the past seven decades, every incumbent with an approval rating above 50% has secured a second term. The only exception to this trend was Barack Obama, who won the 2012 election despite a mediocre 46% approval rating six months before the general election.

No first-term president in Gallup’s history has been re-elected with approval numbers as low as Biden’s. His results this quarter are among the worst of the post-World War II era, ranking in the bottom 12% of all presidential quarters dating back to 1945.

Biden's popularity has remained stubbornly low since the first year of his presidency, amid escalating inflation, a worsening border crisis, and the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. His re-election campaign has been marred by embarrassing blunders, and his aides have struggled to protect their elderly boss from the press as his faltering, shuffling gait suggests his advanced age.

Despite these challenges, current polls indicate a close race for the 2024 presidential election, with Trump holding a slight 0.3% lead over Biden in the RealClearPolitics aggregate of national polls.

The Gallup national survey, conducted from April 1 to April 22, involved 1,001 Americans and has a 4-point margin of error.
