Melania Trump, the former First Lady of the United States, has reportedly expressed her disapproval of her husband's ongoing hush money trial, which commenced on Monday.

Despite her conspicuous absence from numerous campaign events, Ms. Trump has allegedly described the trial as "a disgrace" and akin to election interference, according to a source close to the Trump family who spoke to The New York Times.

This revelation emerged on the second day of Donald Trump's criminal trial in New York City. Ms. Trump has not accompanied her husband to court, reportedly stating in private conversations that the trial is "his problem" alone, as reported by The New York Times.

As of now, seven jurors have been selected for the trial, with the selection process set to continue on Thursday. Mr. Trump faces 34 charges of falsifying business records in an attempt to hide a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. The payment was allegedly made to silence Daniels about a purported affair in 2006.

Initially classified as misdemeanors, the charges have been escalated to felonies by Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, who asserts that they contravene state and federal election laws. This marks the first time a former American president has stood trial on criminal charges.

Ms. Trump's backing of her husband is particularly significant given the trial's subject matter. She was reportedly incensed when allegations first surfaced that her husband had paid off an adult film star with whom he allegedly had an affair, a claim he continues to refute. Following the news, she reportedly distanced herself from him, opting to travel separately to his 2018 State of the Union address.

In recent months, Ms. Trump has largely withdrawn from the public eye, missing most campaign events and milestones, including her husband's Super Tuesday primary election wins watch party. Mr. Trump has stated that she will return to the public sphere on her own terms.

"She's a private person, a great person, a very confident person, and she loves our country very much. She'll be — at the appropriate time — she'll be out there," Mr. Trump said during a September interview with Meet the Press.

Earlier this year, Ms. Trump's mother, Amalija Knavs, passed away at the age of 78. Mr. Trump paid tribute to Knavs, describing her as a "great and beautiful mother" who will be greatly missed by the family.

"This is a very sad night for the entire Trump family!!! Melania's great and beautiful mother, Amalija, has just gone to a beautiful place in the sky. She was an incredible woman, and will be missed far beyond words!" Mr. Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

However, the former first lady's public appearances seem to be increasing. Ms. Trump recently attended a general election fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, and is scheduled to appear at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser on Saturday for the Log Cabin Republicans, a group that identifies itself as "the nation's largest Republican organization dedicated to representing LGBT conservatives and allies."
