The violent rampage, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, resulted in six fatalities and left eight others injured. Among the victims was 38-year-old Ashlee Good, a mother who tragically lost her life while shielding her nine-month-old baby, who was also injured in the attack. Other victims included 48-year-old architect Jade Young, 25-year-old Dawn Singleton, and security guard Faraz Tahir, who was mourned by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Australia as a "cherished member of our community".

Anthony Cooke, the assistant commissioner of New South Wales Police, provided a detailed account of the incident in a subsequent press conference. He explained that Inspector Scott had discharged her firearm after Cauchi lunged at her with his knife. "She confronted the offender who had moved, by this stage, to level five. As she continued to walk quickly behind to catch up with him, he turned to face her, raised a knife, she discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased."
