In a state visit that has sparked a wave of reactions, President Joe Biden, 81, welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, 66, to the White House on Wednesday.

The meeting, however, was marked by moments that suggested the President appeared disoriented, raising concerns among observers.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and shook hands with members of the US and Japanese delegations on the South Lawn. Subsequently, they ascended a stage to honor the national anthems of both nations and review the US military honor guards.

Before the review, a military aide saluted Biden and Kishida. In response, the President raised his right hand to return the salute but abruptly dropped it as the aide directed them to their positions. Biden's demeanor, characterized by a blank gaze and the donning of his signature aviator sunglasses, was noted as he marched across the lawn. Observers also pointed out that his gait seemed stiff, and his steps appeared tentative and uncertain.

Despite these observations, the leaders eventually returned to the podium to deliver their remarks. Biden emphasized the robust relationship between Washington and Tokyo, stating it was "closer, stronger, and more effective than ever before in history." He expressed gratitude to Japan for the gift of 3,000 cherry trees over a century ago, which have since become an iconic symbol of Washington, DC. The President also acknowledged the "devastating" conflict of World War II between the two allies, emphasizing that they had chosen friendship over perpetual enmity.

However, the President's demeanor did not go unnoticed. The RNC Research X account highlighted Biden's troubles, triggering a flurry of responses. A conservative account named Proud Elephant criticized, "Why does Joe Biden look so lost & confused? What an embarrassment this man is." Another user sarcastically suggested, "They might as well put a leash on him. He literally has to be led around so he doesn't get lost. This is so embarrassing."

Biden, the oldest chief executive in US history, has been repeatedly criticized for appearing dazed and confused during high-profile events. If he were to serve a second four-year term, he would be 86 at its conclusion. His chief rival, former President Donald Trump, 77, could surpass him as the oldest commander-in-chief if he wins the upcoming Nov. 5 election and serves a full second term.
