Abbott countered that it was, in fact, Biden who was using these individuals for political gain, stating that the president's actions were "destroying the country that he’s in charge of.”
Abbott stated, "So the person who’s actually using illegal immigrants as political pawns is Joe Biden. Joe Biden has created this open border policy that has allowed illegal immigrants into our country to appeal to and to appease the far leftists in the Democrat Party, the people like [Rep. Alexandra] Ocasio-Cortez [D-N.Y.], in hopes of trying to win their support while at the same time destroying the country that he’s in charge of."
The Texas governor did not stop there, criticizing Biden for jeopardizing the nation's security. "He is the commander in chief, in charge of national security for our country. Our country is being invaded in ways that put our country at risk because of the political games that Joe Biden has played," he said.

Abbott has also been vocal on social media, condemning the president's policies. He wrote, "Pres. Biden’s open border policies enable cartels to run human smuggling operations into the U.S. I signed a law last year to crack down on human smuggling with a 10-year mandatory minimum jail sentence. We continue to raise awareness and fight back against this heinous crime."

The governor also had pointed words for New York City Mayor Eric Adams, with whom he has frequently clashed over the issue of illegal immigration. Abbott has been sending illegal immigrants from the Texas border to cities like New York, where they are welcomed by local leaders.
Abbott criticized Adams, saying, "And Mayor Adams is just aiding and abetting that by having a sanctuary city status welcoming anybody from across the world to live there or stay there in New York City, on the bill of New York City."
He further advised Adams to focus on his own city's issues before criticizing others. "And what Mayor Adams needs to do, he needs to stop talking boldly about illegal immigration and the migrants that Texas is sending there, and he needs to step up and do his own job because look at the dangers in New York City, under his watch. You have a police officer who is killed. You have the train system in New York, which is treacherous for travelers. You got police officers attacked in Times Square by illegal immigrants."
