After announcing Monday that President Joe Biden would bid reelection in 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris used more dodgy phrasing in rare on-the-record comments.

The White House told Harris’s traveling press pool Wednesday that the Vice President wished to clarify remarks she made this week about Biden’s 2024 plans.

Asked if Biden was definitely running, Harris said: “The president intends to run, and if he does, I will be his ticket mate. We will run together.”

The remarks, made aboard Air Force Two before crossing to California for two political fundraisers, eased an earlier assertion that indicated the two leaders had made a final decision.

Harris had been asked Monday to respond to Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) supporting her potential candidacy in 2024 if Biden forgoes a re-election campaign.

“Joe Biden is running for reelection, and I will be his ticket mate,” Harris told CNN, adding, “Full stop. That's it.”

While Biden has often said that he hopes to run for reelection, he has not made a proper announcement and has left open the possibility that he could step aside.

The step back comes as Democrats doubt Biden’s future electoral prospects.

David Axelrod, former President Barack Obama’s chief strategist during two winning presidential campaigns, said in June that Democrats should weigh Biden’s age when deciding who should lead the party heading into 2024.

“The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue,” Axelrod told the New York Times for an article about some Democrats’ worries over Biden’s age.

Some Democrats are looking past the 2022 midterm elections to 2024, with many uncertain of whether to support President Joe Biden should he try to seek a second term.

Although he has not launched a re-election bid, Biden has plans to run again in 2024 if he remains in good health, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. His ambitions have been met with quiet concerns about whether Democrats will support the 79-year-old President amid concerns about his age and electability in a possible rematch against former President Donald Trump.

Here’s where some of the most high-profile Democrats stand on whether they’d back Biden in 2024: A one-time challenger to Biden in the 2020 election, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has indicated he would back the president if he chooses to run again in 2024.

Cristobal Alex, a former official in the Biden White House, said the President is the only Democrat who could win a national election while calling on the Democratic Party to promote his policies to polish his reputation before 2024.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), David Axelrod, Howard Dean (D-VT), and Steve Simeonidis will also back Biden in his bid.
