An overall total of 28% selected “not sure” when asked who they wanted to head the ’24 Democrat ticket. “For a sitting President barely into his second year in office to be below 20% in the next election’s preference shows just how low Biden has dropped in the public eye,” the I&I/TIPP survey analyst said. “Last week’s I&I/TIPP Poll results showed that a similar level (21%) of Americans didn’t think Biden would even finish his first term, much less run for a second.”

The latest I&I/TIPP survey offered 19 names, “other,” and “not sure,” as options when asking Americans who should be atop the ’24 Democrat ticket. Harris was the only person to land in double digits among Democrat respondents, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former first lady Michelle Obama, each with 7%. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received 5%.

Among Republican (8%) and independent (15%) respondents, not surprisingly, Biden received less support to be the ’24 nominee of his party. “So, taken together, it’s ABB — ‘anybody but Biden,’” the I&I/TIPP analyst said. The RealClearPolitics average of recent polls shows Biden’s approval rating at 40.9%, while his average disapproval rating was 53.8% — a 13-point gap.

In a head-to-head contest between Biden and former President Donald Trump, RealClearPolitics found that Trump led 45.1 to 42.0. The most recent poll figured into the average, taken in March by the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll, handed Trump a 47%-41% lead. The I&I/TIPP Poll was conducted April 4-6 among 981 registered voters and had a margin of error of +/-3.2 percentage points.
