While the mainstream media has been spinning a story about President Joe Biden TELLING former President Barack Obama that he intends to run for reelection, many in the center and on the right are asking if it wasn't more of a request for permission to run again in 2024.

It is no secret that Obama is deeply embedded in the White House, with many staffers in the current administration has been Obama employees. Even Kamala Harris was Obama's choice for Vice President. Many, in fact, call this Obama's third term. So who does Obama want to carry the torch in two and half years?

The President’s aspiration to attempt a second term is driven by the belief that he is the only Democratic candidate who could defeat former President Donald Trump, sources told the Hill. Biden has said publicly he wishes to run again, but the report signals he’s serious by directly telling one of the highest-profile members of the Democratic Party of his intentions.

” [Biden] wants to run, and he’s clearly letting everyone know,” one of the sources said. “I believe he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Trump. I don’t think he thinks there’s anyone in the Democratic Party who can beat Trump, and that’s the biggest factor.”

It’s not clear when Biden spoke to Obama about the decision to run, though the former President made an appearance at the White House earlier this month to commemorate 12 years of Obamacare. Biden said last month during an overseas trip to Brussels that he would want a rematch against Trump despite not committing to running.

“We’re a long way off in elections — a long way off,” Biden said. “My focus of any election is on making sure that we retain the House and the United States Senate so that I have the room to continue to do the things that I’ve been able to do in terms of growing the economy and deal in a rational way with American foreign policy and lead the world.”

Polls suggest flagging support for the President amid rising inflation and conflict in Ukraine. Biden’s approval ratings stand at an average of 41.8% as of Monday, narrowly higher than that of Trump’s at the same point in his presidency, according to a compilation of polls by FiveThirtyEight.

The White House did not provide comment on the conversations between Biden and Obama. A Biden adviser pointed to the President’s public comments that he intends to run again.

In 2020, Biden surged to victory in the Democratic primary on the back of support from Black voters – and a quickly gathering sense that he was indeed the party’s best hope of beating Trump. According to books and reports about the 2020 campaign, Obama doubted whether Biden could win.

Edward-Isaac Dovere, author of Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Trump, reports: “Obama was doubtful about [Biden’s] prospects. He didn’t think Biden could be a disciplined enough candidate.”

Dovere also says Obama doubted Biden’s stamina for the race, was not sure he had the requisite “swagger” for an American President, and worried his vice-President had “trouble … connecting with crowds”.
