The Democrat Led Congress Is Truly An Old Age Home

The trio of top House Democrats - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn - are bidding for re-election.

The 81-year-old Clyburn announced Monday he would run for a 15th term, while the 81-year-old Pelosi and 82-year-old Hoyer had previously announced 2022 runs.

The eighty-year-olds have a combined age of 244 - and none have tried to step down from leadership posts, despite the increasing prospect Republicans could put them back in the minority.

In 2018, Pelosi devoted "just four more years" of the speaker to get several detractors on board.

She had previously served as House speaker from 2007 to 2011. The Real Clear Politics average gives Republicans a 3.6 point advantage over Democrats when voters were asked their generic party preference heading into the 2022 midterms.

Historically, the party in the White House loses seats during the President’s first midterm.

In 1998, with Bill Clinton in the White House, Democrats gained five House seats. How did Democrats buck history? GOP arrogance and overreach. The House GOP, led by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich, impeached Clinton for lying about his affair with an intern, Monica Lewinsky. But as midterm exit polls found, two-thirds of voters didn’t think Clinton — who was leading a strong economy — should have been impeached, and they cast their votes accordingly.

And now Democrats only have a 12-seat majority in the House.

They’re split 50-50 with Republicans in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as a tie-breaking vote.

If the House does lean to the Republicans, there are questions about whether Pelosi, Hoyer, and Clyburn would stay on for their entire terms - or more easily turn over the leadership keys to younger members.

The No. 4 Democrat is 58-year-old Rep. Katherine Clark from Massachusetts.

She elevated the Democrats’ leadership ladder due to her fundraising capabilities.

The No. 5 Democrat, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, has long been deemed future speaker material.

He’d make history, too, as the 51-year-old Jeffries could become the country’s first Black speaker.

Today’s GOP is even more arrogant and heavy-handed than Gingrich’s GOP. Consider the Texas law that bans abortion after six weeks and forces a woman who is raped to carry her rapist’s fetus to term. That abomination of a law is being copied by numerous Republican-controlled states despite the fact that 65 percent of Americans believe the Supreme Court should uphold its landmark Roe v. Wade decision, and only 29 percent support the Supreme Court striking down the constitutional right to abortion access. The Republicans don’t care what a majority of Americans think; they only care about imposing their extreme religious beliefs upon the rest of us.
