Her outspoken attack comes after days of controversy over Rep. Lauren Boebert who was caught on video saying that Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar could be a terrorist.
A day earlier, Omar described death threats she announced she had got in response.
"People truly don't understand the scale, intensity, & volume of threats targeting @IlhanMN," tweeted Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow member of the so-called "Squad" of progressive Democrats.

The latest controversy erupted with a video revealing Boebert addressing followers throughout the Thanksgiving break when she told a story about sharing an elevator with Omar.
'"Well, she doesn't have a backpack. We should be fine,'" Boebert recalled speaking to an aide, to hoots of laughter.

"And I said, 'Oh look, the jihad squad decided to show up for work today.'"
Omar explained that the incident never even happened. And the comments quickly attracted widespread criticism and calls for punishment.
Boebert tweeted on Thursday: "I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep Omar. I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly."

"There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without unnecessary distraction."
Since then, an additional video dating back to September revealed Boebert making a similar joke.

She called Omar to smooth things over, though their conversation ended when the Democrat hung up the phone with each lawmaker demanding an apology.

"She didn't want to hear what I had to say," Boebert told Laura Ingraham on Fox News on Tuesday evening.
"Omar and the left don't want an apology. They want public humiliation. They want to cancel me but that's not going to happen… I will not be canceled."
Recent precedent suggests she can count on the support of McCarthy in the face of Democratic criticism.
