New York Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler may be concluding his congressional service after close to 30 years, at the end of his term in 2023, according to Saturday reports.

Fox News could not immediately reach Nadler for comment, but according to a Hill insider, Nadler has not yet decided whether he will seek re-election in 2022, the New York Post reported.

"People are wondering when he would decide to retire," said one associate, who noted that Democrats could lose control of the House of Representatives next year, with Nadler facing a prolonged future in the minority. "He has a fighting spirit but maybe now is the time to exit."

Nadler, like every member of the House, would be up for reelection in the 2022 midterms. He is unlikely to face a serious primary.

At 74, he first took up his congressional seat in 1992, but with what some Democrats fear could be a challenging 2022 midterm election, the long-time New York Representative may decide to bring it to a close.

The New York Democrat currently serves as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, one of Congress's most powerful committee positions.

In 2019 the Congressman nearly collapsed at a Manhattan press conference and had to be rushed to a hospital. He famously underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002 and was once so obese he couldn’t use the subway. His wife Joyce Miller was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020, forcing Nadler to miss part of President Trump’s impeachment trial.

“It’s not the first I’m hearing about it,” veteran Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf told The Post. “Does he really want to be in the minority next year? How much more can he get done.”

A Nadler departure would be good news for outgoing city Comptroller Scott Stringer, who is hunting for a Plan B after coming up short in the city mayor’s race earlier this year.

Last month, in a campaign address, Vice President Kamala Harris endeavored to bolster support for Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor’s race by telling voters the gubernatorial election would be a premonition of things to come for the Democratic Party.

McAuliffe lost to GOP candidate Glenn Youngkin. Her comments came just one week after the White House saw discouraging approval ratings in a Quinnipiac University survey, which found only 37% of Americans questioned the approval of the job done by President Biden.

A new USA Today/Suffolk University poll released this week found that Biden’s approval rating remains at roughly 38 percent with his disapproval coming in at 59 percent from poll takers.

McAuliffe’s loss coupled with low approval of the White House has left some party officials reeling at what they fear could be another pendulum swing back across the political aisle.

Though Nadler is unlikely to face fierce competition in the 2022 midterm race if he decides to run again, the staunch Democrat may not want to continue the fight with the prospect of losing the House to the GOP.
