A group led by former Vice President Mike Pence's Chief of Staff, Marc Short, launched a $100,000 ad campaign on Thursday aimed at five Democratic House members over the rising cost of consumer goods, The Hill has revealed.

Americans nationwide are contending with surging inflation, particularly for gas, fuel oil, used and new vehicles, and food. CNN reports that higher prices are eating into pay increases and annual cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security benefits and food stamps.

Though employers have been hiking wages in hopes of filling their multitude of open positions, workers are actually worse off than before the coronavirus pandemic began.

In response, The Coalition to Protect American Workers is running digital ads in the home districts of five Moderates who have shown reservations about President Joe Biden's $1.75 trillion spending plan.

The Democrats targeted, as reported by The Hill, are Reps. Stephanie Murphy of Florida, Ed Case of Hawaii, Jared Golden of Maine, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Kurt Schrader of Oregon.

The ad, available for viewing on YouTube, shows a retirement-aged man waking up at 2:30 a.m. to make himself a cup of coffee.

A voiceover states that President Biden "doesn't understand just how bad inflation is hurting Americans." At the same time, it shows news reports of rising consumer prices and the cost of Biden's spending plan.

"If congressional Democrats don't stop Biden and Pelosi's plan, a lot of Americans won't be able to pay their heating bills this winter," the ad concludes as the gas eye on the stove shuts off.

The same five lawmakers were previously targeted by a Club for Growth ad earlier this month, The Hill also reported. The ad comes on the heels of a report that consumer prices rose 6.2% in October, the most since 1990.

"Our polling has consistently shown that inflation and rising prices are top concerns for voters across the country. As prices rise, consumers know that unnecessary government spending is not the way to reduce inflation," said Katie Miller, spokesperson for the Coalition to Protect American Workers.

"President Biden's tax and spending plan will exacerbate the inflation crisis and make it worse for Americans at home," she asserted.

Inflation-adjusted compensation is down 0.6% since December 2019, said Jason Furman, non-resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, citing the latest federal Employment Cost Index data.

The rising prices are also sapping consumers' confidence. According to October's University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey, they expressed greater uncertainty about the year-ahead inflation rate than at any time in nearly 40 years. That concern helped offset the positive impact of higher income expectations and the receding pandemic.

A decline in living standards due to rising inflation was spontaneously mentioned by 1 in 5 households, particularly older and poorer Americans, the survey found.
