Democrats seek to understand Republican Glenn Youngkin's upset victory in the Virginia Gubernatorial race. Some have accused Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema of harming the Democratic force around the country by delaying President Joe Biden's Build Back Better plan.

The Centrist Democrats from West Virginia and Arizona have been the object of anger as they hold out for a lower price tag on the infrastructure bill expected to cost trillions. Some Democrats now think that if the bill had been passed sooner, Virginians would have seen the party capable of passing a popular step, and it would have turned voters to Terry McAuliffe's side.

MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson said that the two senators' "obstruction helped drag down Democratic enthusiasm."

Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, did not cite Manchin and Sinema by name in a statement to an NBC reporter. Still, he said that some Democrats in Congress were to blame for not delivering Biden's campaign commitments before the election.

Paul Krugman, an opinion columnist for the New York Times, also laid partial blame on Manchin for McAuliffe's loss, though he admitted many beneficial factors.

Former South Carolina state representative and author, Bakari Sellers, blamed Manchin and Sinema for "not governing," and he said they "owe the state of Virginia an apology."

The political action committee dedicated to voting Sinema out of office in 2024 used the Virginia race as fodder against her and Manchin.

"[...] they've driven the president's approval rating down nationally and hurt Democrats' chances of winning races in states like Virginia," Primary Sinema PAC wrote. "They have put the entire Democratic Party in peril."

Youngkin defeated Democrat McAuliffe on Tuesday 50.7% to 48.6%.

Youngkin supporters even threw in a "Let's go Brandon" chant at his victory speech — a gaffe-turned-meme that was born after a journalist misreported that a crowd was cheering for NASCAR star Brandon Brown when they were saying "F*** Joe Biden."

He said the Lieutenant Governor for Republicans. Jason Miyares, the GOP candidate for Attorney General, is leading Democrat Mark Herring by about 1%, with 95% of precincts reporting. It also seems the party took control of the House of Delegates, picking up seven seats, though several races are incredibly close. The Senate, not up for election this year, will stay in Democratic control — guaranteeing a divided government.

Youngkin's victory will likely provide a template for Republicans nationwide looking to clinch victory in purple and blue states. He managed to walk a fine line, signaling to Donald Trump's base that he shares their priorities while maintaining enough distance from the former President to remain palatable to moderate Republicans and Independents.
