Ahead of New York's 2022 Governor race, it has been speculated that State Attorney General Letitia James is planning on throwing her hat in the ring.

Her top aides are calling elected officials and labor leaders to ask for an early endorsement of a 2022 Democratic primary run against current Governor Kathy Hochul, four people familiar with the conversations told The City.

"The goal is whatever they can get as soon as possible," announced one source.

James is filming a campaign ad, according to one The City source, and two additional sources stressed that her campaign announcement is imminent.

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for James, Delaney Kempner, said that she "has made a decision regarding the governor's race. She will be announcing it in the coming days."

Hochul, previously lieutenant governor to former Governor Andrew Cuomo, assumed the governorship in late august after Cuomo resigned.

After a report from James' office, found that the former governor sexually harassed 11 females, Cuomo stepped down.

Further eyeing a run for governor are New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

According to a Siena College Research Institute survey issued last week, it was discovered that Hochul is currently in the lead amongst potential voters at 39 percent, James at 20 percent, de Blasio at 10 percent, and Williams at eight percent.

James previously worked on the New York City Council as a representative of Brooklyn, and if elected, would become the first black woman to be elected governor in the United States.

In recent years, she has won praise from fellow Democrats for clashes with the National Rifle Association and Former President Donald Trump, while further managing the sexual harassment accusations against Cuomo, which led to his eventual resignation.

"It's going to be a definitive moment to have a sitting governor challenged by the current attorney general from the same party who are both history-making in their own right," Democratic State Sen. Brad Hoylam told the New York Times.

"This is the beginning of understanding the differences in the candidates and where they stand on different issues and how they differ in their governing philosophies, so we're really at the beginning of what's going to be a very fast-moving, but compressed calendar," he went on.
