"I attempted in good faith to find some ways for us to communicate that would respect each of our preferences," New Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Lapado announced.

Lapado explained that it is important to him to hold conversations with people without the use of masks, "especially when other options exist."

"It is important to me to communicate clearly and effectively with people. I can't do that when half of my face is covered," Lapado stated.

Lapado said he recommended moving the meeting outdoors because data reveals that "outdoor settings are much safer than indoor settings."

Throughout a meeting last week, Florida Senator, Tina Polsky, diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in August, announced she told the surgeon general she had a "serious medical condition," though he "still didn't care," according to WPTV.

Polsky says the entire conversation felt like negotiation and described Lapado as acting "smug."

"I told him I had a serious medical condition," Polsky said. She told the outlet she attempted to ask Ladapo's reason for rejecting the mask and refused the offer to move outside.

As an outcome of his refusal to wear a mask, which health officials recommend to stop the spread of COVID-19 indoors, Lapado and two aides were required to leave the Democrat's office.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer have an increased risk of severe illness if they get COVID-19.

Florida state Senate President Wilton Simpson, a Republican, sent a memo over the weekend to state senators and Senate professional staff, calling the interaction "disappointing" and Lapado's actions "unprofessional."

A Nigerian-born immigrant to the United States, Lapado was appointed by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Sept. 21 to be the Surgeon General and Secretary of the Florida Department of Health.

Aligning himself with DeSantis, who rejects vaccine and mask mandates, as well as business shutdowns throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Lapado says he believes in a personal freedom approach.

Ladapo shares similar beliefs as DeSantis, who has adamantly rejected mandates on masks and vaccinations, in addition to business lockdowns throughout the coronavirus pandemic, claiming that these infringe on people's rights. According to the New York Times coronavirus tracker, Florida recently reported a decline in COVID-19 cases, with infections per 100,000 residents dropping by 12 points, a 48% decrease.

"Part of why that is an issue is because of the climate of distrust that had been engendered over the past year-and-a-half. And that was a direct result of scientists – my colleagues, some of them – taking the science and, basically, misrepresenting it to fit their agendas, their interests, what they wanted to see people do," Ladapo announced.
