In an unexpected twist, the search for a missing diver in Florida led to the discovery of an unrelated body.

The search party, scouring the coastal area near Fort Pierce Inlet for Virgil Price, stumbled upon the body of an unidentified man on Monday afternoon.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, in a press release, stated, “His clothing and physical characteristics do not match those of the missing diver from Sunday.” The man, who appeared to be over 50 years old, did not fit the description of any missing person reports in the county.

The authorities are currently investigating the cause and time of death of the unidentified man, noting that he did not appear to have been in the water for an extended period.

Price, a 39-year-old free diver, disappeared on Sunday morning while diving at a World War II-era shipwreck in the same vicinity, approximately 130 miles north of Miami. Despite his failure to resurface, no trace of Price has been found.

The U.S. Coast Guard, which had been leading the search for Price, announced on Monday night that it was suspending its efforts “pending new info.” Over a span of 36 hours, the military branch covered more than 1,415 miles without any sign of Price.

Lt. Cmdr. John Beal expressed his regret over the suspension of the search, stating, “The decision to suspend an active search is never taken lightly. We extend our sincerest condolences to Mr. Price’s family.”
