President Biden’s approval rating ticked up 3 percentage points in the past week, according to a Politico-Morning Consult poll issued on Wednesday, as Democrats scored a major legislative win with the passage of their climate, health care and tax reform package.

The poll revealed that 42 percent of registered voters announced they approve of Biden's job as president. The same survey issued last week showed Biden’s approval rating was at 39 percent.

At the same time, the number of registered voters who announced they disapproved of his job performance dropped from 59 to 56 percent.

More people in the latest poll further stated the nation was on the right track — 30 percent, compared to 25 percent last week. Seventy percent of registered voters announced it was on the wrong track, compared to 75 percent the previous week.

The latest poll is probably welcome news for Democrats less than three months before November’s midterm elections. Presidential approval ratings are considered one indication of how the president’s party will perform in elections, though Biden’s numbers remain underwater and Democrats still face other headwinds.

The poll was carried out in the days after House Democrats passed sweeping health care, tax reform, and climate bill, with every member of the caucus voting in favor. Senate Democrats had passed the bill through reconciliation the previous week.

Biden signed the measure on Tuesday.

It was a key win for the president and his party after a year of attempting to pass various versions of a larger climate and social spending bill and being stymied by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) because passing the measure through reconciliation needed the backing of all 50 Democrats.

The surprise deal between Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) was a slimmed-down package, yet it still contained some of Biden’s campaign promises and significant climate investments.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll was conducted between Aug. 12-14, among 2,005 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

While that was a strictly Democrat-passed measure, Biden further scored bipartisan wins on gun control and computer chip manufacturing legislation.

Other wins included the U.S.’ killing of the world’s most wanted terrorist, Al Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri, receding gas prices and an unemployment rate at the lowest level in 50 years.

Despite the news, Mr. Biden is still underwater with voters, sending mixed messages regarding Democrats’ changes in the November midterms. Political prognosticators have forecasted a Republican landslide, yet Wednesday’s poll might give them hope that they could blunt GOP attempts to take control of both chambers of Congress.
