Chris Cuomo said Friday that his brother Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as governor of New York last year after facing sexual harassment claims, has been struggling since leaving office.

The former CNN anchor, who recently revealed plans to jump on the airwaves at NewsNation after he was booted by CNN last December for helping his brother amid controversy, said it was hard watching his brother struggle.

“I’m supposed to say, ‘Oh, he’s great!’ But that would be what we call bulls***,” Cuomo told Bill Maher on his HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher. “This has been hard, and you learn a lot about the people in your life when you watch them struggle. It’s true: When you struggle, you learn who your friends are. ... But he has been in a struggle, and I have watched it. And I am proud of how he’s handling himself.”

Cuomo backed his defense of the decision to support his brother despite his role as a news anchor, saying, "Obviously, I’m not objective. Obviously, I’m going to help him.”

The news personality said he also felt a "lost sense of purpose" since being fired from CNN and would not claim he was "happy" despite his planned return to the airwaves. Cuomo also launched a new podcast last week.

Andrew Cuomo, who denied all allegations of wrongdoing, has sparked curiosity about his political plans, but he has missed the deadline to challenge his successor, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, in the Democratic primary election.

"I want to build something special here," Cuomo said, adding that he does not think he cannot go back to what people see as the "big game" and touted a need for "insurgent media."

Chris Cuomo appeared on NewsNation’s Dan Abrams Live to discuss the aftermath of his termination from CNN. In that interview, Chris Cuomo denied contacting reporters to “affect their coverage” of brother Andrew Cuomo, who quit being a governor amid the sexual misconduct allegations. The former governor denied all allegations of inappropriate touching.

Although Chris Cuomo admitted he had spoken to fellow journalists covering the story, he denied using his power to influence coverage of his brother.
