Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis celebrated Shark Week by sending out a tongue-in-cheek fundraising email touting the lack of shark attacks that have taken place throughout his tenure.

Polis is running for re-election in November, and his campaign boasted that Colorado, a landlocked state, is once again "tied for first" for the state with the fewest shark attacks on Tuesday.

The email blast asked that recipients pitch in $1 to spread the message regarding Polis' "strong record on shark safety."

“Last year, I emailed you to share the good news that Colorado was tied for first for the state with the fewest shark attacks,” the fundraising email read. “So now, as we kick off Shark Week, I wanted to share an important update. And that update is that Colorado has once again had zero shark attacks so far in 2022.”

"It turns out many voters don't know that Colorado is faring so much better than other states regarding shark attacks," Polis' email reads. "We need to get the message out – not only about my strong record on shark safety, but on issues like creating affordable housing, saving people money on health care, and protecting our planet from climate change."

The email contained a map of the U.S. emphasizing coastal states in various shades of red depending on how frequently they experience shark attacks.

Polis' fundraiser arrives amid a spate of attacks across the U.S. Long Island, New York saw its fifth shark attack in two weeks on July 14 when a shark bit a 49-year-old man in the wrist and buttocks.

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul addressed the attacks by ordering more surveillance along state beaches.

"As New Yorkers and visitors alike head to our beautiful Long Island beaches to enjoy the summer, our top priority is their safety," the governor announced last week. "We are taking action to expand patrols for sharks and protect beachgoers from potentially dangerous situations. I encourage all New Yorkers to listen to local authorities and take precautions to help ensure safe and responsible beach trips this summer."

Under State Park shark safety guidelines, swimming is suspended following a shark sighting so the shoreline can be inspected by drone. Swimming is only permitted to resume at least an hour after the last sighting in order to better protect beach visitors. All sightings are referred to the Long Island Coastal Awareness Group, which consists of 180 individuals from municipalities, agencies, and private beach operators stretching from Queens through Long Island. State Park lifeguards are continuously scanning and patrolling the waters and are on the lookout for any sharks or different possibly dangerous marine life.
