The Democratic gubernatorial nominee in South Carolina, Joe Cunningham, is advising President Joe Biden not to pursue a second term.

"He should step aside and allow for a new generation of leadership," Cunningham said about the 79-year-old president.

Cunningham, 40, was a House member from 2019-21, failing his reelection bid in a Republican-leaning coastal district. Cunningham faces an uphill battle for governor in the strongly GOP Palmetto State against Republican Gov. Henry McMaster.

Cunningham's remarks may not go down well in a state where Biden has loyalists. Biden recovered his 2020 Democratic primary effort by winning South Carolina by a strong majority. Biden had finished fourth and fifth in the early nominating contests of Iowa and New Hampshire, and the South Carolina primary became a turning point for his campaign.

Biden went on to win the Democratic primary and beat President Donald Trump in the fall.

As President, though, Biden is drawing skepticism from some Democrats over the fact that he would be 82 at the start of a second term.

"Biden shouldn't run for another term," Cunningham told the Washington Post. "You mean to tell me, out of hundreds of thousands of people in our country, that as you look toward 2024, Biden and Trump are the best we have?"

Cunningham's remarks follow similar concerns over McMaster, who is 75. The two will face off in the gubernatorial election on November 8. McMaster has been governor since 2017, and South Carolina's lieutenant governor and attorney general before that.

"I can't sit there and tell you with a straight face that Gov. McMaster is too old to govern and not confront the problems in my own party," Cunningham explained.

Asked more about possible Democratic nominees for president in 2024 if Biden decides not to run, he said, "I don't think there's any heir apparent."

"I would love to see a big field, including lots of Democratic governors. Step up and show people what you've done," he continued.

A recent poll of likely Democratic primary voters revealed that Biden is not the first choice for 2024. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg came out in the lead, garnering 17% support. Biden only received 16%, despite being the incumbent.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) tied for third place, both receiving 10%. Vice President Kamala Harris fell flat, coming in sixth place with only 6%.
