Twitter’s new owner declared Truth Social is a “terrible name” and suggested something a little different.
“Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech,” Musk wrote in a tweet, referencing former President Donald Trump, who launched Truth Social. Musk then suggested the social media platform be called “Trumpet.”

Truth Social is currently outpacing Twitter and TikTok on the Apple Store. The Truth Social app rose to No. 1 on Apple’s app charts on Tuesday, a surprising development after some theorized that free-speech proponent Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter on Monday would significantly affect the viability of Trump’s Big Tech alternative. Musk noticed the sudden change in the app’s download rates. “Truth Social is currently beating Twitter & TikTok on the Apple Store,” Musk even tweeted on Tuesday.

The app is outperforming Instagram and TikTok, and Twitter is left a “ghost town” full of bots, Devin Nunes, CEO of the Trump Media & Technology Group, claimed during a Wednesday Fox & Friends appearance. This surge appears to have occurred in the last 48 hours. According to Fast Company, Truth Social was at No. 52, and Twitter was No. 39 as of Sunday. This will be a significant surge for Trump’s app, as it saw a 93% decrease in sign-ups a month after the app’s initial release on the Apple App Store.

“Before April 23, Truth Social had not previously ranked since March 12,” Stephanie Chan, mobile insights strategist at Sensor Tower, told the Wrap. “This was also the first time Truth Social has ranked at No. 1 on the overall U.S. App Store since February 24 shortly after its launch.”
Truth Social’s waitlist was cleared after the app moved to Rumble’s cloud service, a development that could increase accessibility for the social media platform, Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes announced on Friday. Nunes has praised the platform’s community as one of its strengths.

The increased downloads could also be connected to the former President’s statements about his future on social media. Trump has said several times that he has no interest in returning to Twitter if reinstated and has used Musk’s acquisition of Twitter to advocate Truth Social.
