According to Mediaite, there was a private exchange between Captain Michael Burnham, the Black female protagonist of the series, and Abrams. In it, the story is set up for the main protagonist to continue the series examining planets on behalf of a reunited Federation.

When an NBC contributor mentioned the Stacey Abrams Star Trek cameo on Thursday morning, he highlighted how Abrams had been a fan of the show. She participated in a political discussion named “Star Trek: The Next Election” featuring diverse former cast members of the franchise.

The episode premiered as Abrams is once again running for governor of Georgia. According to Politico, she’s now unopposed for the primary cycle and will likely face off against either Republican Governor Brian Kemp or former Senator David Perdue come November.
In early February, Abrams stirred up controversy when she made a public appearance among schoolchildren throughout a photo-op in which the school children were masked and she was not.
