Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves authorized a bill on Monday that makes the state the latest to forbid teaching Critical Race Theory in public schools.

For six hours on Thursday, Black Mississippi House representatives argued against a bill that would set limits on discussions of race in classrooms. Once their arguments wrapped up, though, the chamber approved the bill in a 75-43 vote, sending it to the governor’s desk with only white Republicans voting in favor.

Rep. Donnie Scoggin, a White Ellisville Republican, told lawmakers on the floor that the bill would not affect the teaching of history. “History is history, and all we’re saying is there’s not going to be discrimination on race, creed or sex,” he said.

The text of the bill says that “no public institutions of higher learning, school district or public school, including public charter schools, shall direct or otherwise compel students to personally affirm, adopt or adhere to any of the following tenants (sic): (a) That any sex, race, ethnicity, religion or national origin is inherently superior or inferior; or (b) That individuals should be adversely treated on the basis of their sex, race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.”

In a video announcing the signing of the bill, Reeves condemned “the radical Left and the media” for spreading “misinformation on this issue.”

“Students are being force-fed an unhealthy dose of progressive fundamentalism that runs counter to the principles of America’s founding,” Reeves said. “Children are dragged to the front of the classroom and are coerced to declare themselves as oppressors, taught that they should feel guilty because of the color of their skin or that they are inherently a victim because of their race.”

“I know you’ll agree with me when I say that there is no room for this type of indoctrination in our state,” he continued. “[The bill] states that no student will be forced to affirm that ‘any sex, race, ethnicity, religion or national origin is inherently superior or inferior.’”

Critical Race Theory has been a significant flashpoint over the last year due to its presence in the public school curriculum. The theory posits that American institutions and culture are systemically racist and oppressive to racial minorities.

Progressive activists and Democratic politicians have repeatedly insisted that the theory is only taught in law school and is not present in K-12 instruction despite substantial evidence to the contrary. The theory is often taught to teachers and staff in professional development programs that instruct teachers to integrate aspects of the theory into classroom instruction.
